I’m currently in the US, just a few days after the presidential election. As recent political events in both the US and the UK have shown, democratic processes can arouse strong feelings, and by definition not everyone will approve of the results.
One of the themes running through The Word Detective is the democratization of the OED (the “z” is Oxford’s preferred style, as well as the US spelling) and I’ve written an article about this for The Daily Beast.
I am reading The Word Detective now and it is absolutely fascinating! I’m 72 years old, a semi-retired academic, living near Boston, and I buy two to three books a month. This book is by far the best I’ve had the pleasure to purchase in many a year. Beautifully written, I am thoroughly captivated by The Word Detective and am allowing myself the privilege of only reading a few pages a day just to make it last longer. Thank you for writing such a marvelous book!
